I recently worked with a client who asked me about her LinkedIn Summary.

She asked “Don’t I just copy the summary from my Resume?”

Many people don’t realise the importance of a great summary section in your LinkedIn profile. More than any other section, the summary represents you, your business and your brand. It is also one of the most viewed section on LinkedIn.

If you get this area right, you are well on the way to having a strong profile on LinkedIn – and attracting more of your target audience.  It’s a bit like the introduction on a company website.  If it is not compelling to the reader they will simply go to another website.

To write a standout summary you need 3 key elements:

Clarity

Firstly, be clear about your objective. Before writing your summary, be clear about what you want to achieve with LinkedIn.

Are you using it to raise your credibility or are you looking to expand your network?

Are you seeking new clients?

Understand what you are trying to do and make sure this is clear in your summary.   Make a strong, compelling summary that will have your ideal audience thinking you are what they need to solve their problem.

Relevance

You need to make it relevant to your audience.  Make a strong, compelling summary that will have your ideal audience thinking you are what they need to solve their problem. The key to a strong LinkedIn summary is writing for your future, not your past.

Keywords

Your summary meets the blend of keywords and your purpose. The content will be targeted to your audience and purpose. For a job seeker, think about content that will engage a recruiter. For a sales professional, think about your clients.

The summary section is limited to 2,00 characters.  Ensure your LinkedIn summary aligns with who you are but isn’t all about how great you are.  It is about how you can help solve your ideal audiences problem.

By having clarity, relevance and keywords, this client was in a position to craft a summary that was positioning her for her future not her past.
