I had a few people asking me last week what they should be doing with their social media given the current circumstances.
With more and more people limiting their face-to-face interactions, in the last week we have seen increases in social media and online activity.
CNBC reported last week that,
“Web traffic spiked 20% in one week amid coronavirus shutdown”.
In addition, 66% of social media users believe their social media usage habits will increase in the event they are confined to their homes due to the Coronavirus.
What are some practical actions you can take on LinkedIn in the coming days, weeks and months to maintain a connection with your clients, partners, and networks?
1) Assess your toolbox
Firstly, assess your toolbox.
Review your current social media accounts.
Explore other tools that will help you to connect and engage with your audience. This can include online meetings, message and communication platforms.
Action step 1: Assess your toolbox and profiles. Do you need any other tools are this time?
2) Update your social media profiles (including LinkedIn)
This is not only a great time to update your profile, but to update them to reflect any changes or pivots you have made in your service delivery.
This includes the visual elements on LinkedIn.
For example, if you deliver workshops face-to-face with your clients and have a picture of you delivering a workshop, this may not be relevant right now.
If you are now offering online meetings, update your profiles to reflect that.
Action step 2: Review your online profiles. Do you need to make any changes to reflect the change in service delivery?
3) Connect and engage
Social media, in particular, LinkedIn can be used to connect and engage with your clients, partners, and networks. If you go to a regular networking event and it’s canceled you can still reach out and connect with people who would have been at the event. Be open to online alternatives. Yes, it will be different, but it will help you maintain a connection with your clients, partners, and networks during this time.
Action step 3: Who can you reach out to and connect and engage with? What online events can you attend?
4) Prepare for the future
I find in working with clients that content development is often something that falls to the end of the to-do list. If you are finding that you are not as busy, it’s a great time to make that content schedule and write those articles.
Action step 4: Have a list of articles to write? Need to get your content plan together? Now is the time to prepare for the future.
5) Develop your skills
LinkedIn is making 16 LinkedIn Learning courses available for free. These include ways to stay productive, build relationships when you’re not face-to-face, use virtual meeting tools like Microsoft Teams, Skype, BlueJeans, Cisco Webex, and Zoom, and find a healthy work-life balance while working from home.
Action step 5: Is there any training you can undertake?
Like everything, this will pass. And the actions that you take in the coming days, weeks and months will impact your positioning when it’s done.
